This course offers a sweeping journey through human creativity and expression, from prehistoric cave art to contemporary digital media. Students begin by learning to analyze and appreciate visual art, then explore the development of artistic traditions in ancient Mesopotamia, Egypt, Greece, Rome, and other early civilizations. As the course progresses, students trace the rebirth of classical ideals in the Renaissance, examine the impact of religious and political change in the Baroque and Enlightenment eras, and follow the evolution of Romanticism, Realism, and modern art movements. Global perspectives are woven throughout the course, with focused studies on African, Asian, Indigenous, and Latin American art traditions. Students engage with painting, sculpture, architecture, music, and literature as they connect artistic masterpieces to the human stories and cultural shifts that shaped them. From cave paintings to cubism, sacred temples to street murals, this course explores how humans have expressed beauty, belief, and identity across time and around the world.
